DIY Sushi Time!

I've heard from friends that you can pick up a cool sushi kit at one of the local stores if you're really wanting sushi without having to travel forty five minutes to an hour and a half to get your fix. Of course, I was talking to Eric about it and we agreed that it'd be fun to test this out at our house since we're total sushi addicts.

I popped over to the store and picked up a Saitaku sushi kit. At first, I thought I got so insanely good at reading Dutch that I could CLEARLY read the instructions...and to my shock, they were all in English! ENGLISH!!!

ENGLISH!!! AHHHHHHH!!! As Eric would say it... "ENGRISH"

Here's what comes in the kit:
Sushi rice
Sushi vinegar
Soy sauce
Sushi nori
Ginger
Wasabi paste
Rolling mat
Chop sticks
VERY easy instruction leaflet that has pictures that tells you how to roll up the rice / nori.

Since Eric and I are huge fans of shrimp tempura, we opted to make some for the rolls:

Once the shrimp was all fried up, the carrots & avocado's were sliced, rice was finished, and we made our samurai sauce, we started working on rolling everything together. Not bad, right?

To my relief, they came out SO...SO good! We basically made spicy shrimp tempura rolls for our first attempt of ever making sushi at home! It was a lot of fun and it was extremely entertaining to watch Eric and myself cook something that's totally out of our comfort zone. I have no problems making Mexican, German, and even Greek food..but Japanese, even something as simple as sushi, it totally out in left field for me.

SO, if we can do it, you can too!

Date Day al la Hasselt

It's been a lil bits since Eric and I had a date day, so, we ended up heading over to Hasselt due to the fact that we were wanting to watch "Snow White and the Huntsman" at the awesome Kinepolis theater. . Not only were we wanting to catch a movie, we were jonsing for some sushi! Normally, we go up to Aachen to our favorite sushi place, Crazy Sushi, but we were willing to try out a difference place since we weren't gonna drive an hour and a half for sushi, then an hour and forty five minutes to catch a movie, lol.

After looking up information on a sushi place, I realized that there was an Oil & Vinegar store as well as The Body Shop within a short distance from where we were gonna eat. SCORE! We were needing to hit up both of them since Eric swears by The Body Shops shaving cream, and I was needing to top off our garlic olive oil bottle.  Done and done!

My three favorite were places right next to one another! EEEEEE!!! The Body Shop, Panos (a sandwich place) and Oil & Vinegar. If only there was a Lush store ...le sigh... then I'd be in heaven..

While Eric went over to The Body Shop to pick up some more shaving goodies for himself, I made my way over to Oil & Vinegar. I'm seriously going to miss this place when the time comes for us to move back to the States! This particular location has TONS of Turkish seasonings and stuff to use in Tagines. Ahhhh!! They even have preserved lemons, which I need in order to make Lemon Chicken Tagine (I always forget to make lemons for it and it's a two-ish week process). SO, now I know where to go in order to get my goodies!

We ended up finding a really killer Wasabi & Ginger sauce that I'll use the next time I make a stir fry meal. If it works out well for us, I think I'll pick up some more and send some to my Dad since I know he's a fiend for wasabi flavored things. In addition to that sauce, we also got a Chili & Garlic sauce that we'll be test driving tonight with some eye of round we'll be cooking up. Of course, we got another liter of our beloved garlic olive oil and I even got a REALLY cool glass bottle to store it in. I have a Polish pottery bottle that holds my walnut olive oil in it, so I thought it'd work out to have a different kind of bottle to hold the garlic one :)

By the time we finished up at those stores, it was time to make our way over to Oishii's, which is a sushi bar & grill. Apparently, it's been around since 2010...which blows my mind cause I must've walked past it dozens of times and never noticed it, lol.

I was loving the paper lanterns they had hanging over our seating area! Tons of cherry blossoms everywhere :)

Juuuuuuust in case anyone was interested in going to Oishii's, I snapped a picture of their sushi menu. I tried finding their menu listed on their website as well as prices, but they weren't listed which made it a lil hard to figure out what we were looking at in terms of cost. Given, they're a little expensive compared to other sushi establishments, but after having some great conversations with the waitress that worked with us..it turns out that labor costs in Belgium are much higher than those in Germany. They actually have another place in Aachen (go figure!) and most of the items on their menu are half the price as to what they are in Hasselt. Good to know!

If you're really wanting to know what the menu says, you can translate it yourself :)

Eric ended up ordering the "Best Friend Special Rolls" and LOVED it! Given, only one of the rolls was deep fried (his sort of thing), but he really enjoyed the flavor since none of them had that overly "fishy" taste like some rolls have. If you know my husband, you know he can eat like a machine. Shockingly enough, these filled him up! I'm IMPRESSED!

I ordered myself a Volcano Roll as well as a Tempura Roll...they were AWESOME and definitely hit the spot for me!

We were the only customers in the place and the staff was amazing! I think we hung out in there for an hour and a half because we got caught up in people watching and talking with the waitress about the sushi making classes that they offered. In fact, I'm actually trying to get a group of people together from our base for a class there later this year (thinking around September) since it'd be a lot of fun. Might as well if you're a fan of sushi, right? I'm definitely looking forward it!

Speaking of people watching....when we were on our way back to the parking garage to head over to the movie theater, I couldn't help myself and snapped a picture of this couple. YES, a couple was dressed like this. I'm the furthest from being a fashionista, but come on. What's with the fad that's going on right now with pastel skinny jeans. I mean, really? The wife (top picture) was wearing a hot orange shirt with an oatmeal colored cardigan while wearing teal pants...while her husband was wearing a blue stripped dress shirt, grass green cardigan with orange jeans.

REALLY.

Made it to the movie and was pretty pleased with it. I think the only thing that kinda made me laugh was that Kristen Stewart really didn't have that many lines. Think about it..she's running alot, looking frightened, smiling, then dances around with dwarfs, then sleeps after she bites the apple. After that, she comes back to life, makes a speech before raging into battle and wins. When she's crowned Queen, she doesn't say anything to address her subjects! Just....what!? LOL. I'll give her credit though..her facial expressions have vastly improved since the whole Twilight series.

To top off a fantastic day, we spotted a P-51 Mustang taking off from Genk's airport when we were heading back home.

 Ahhhhhh..I love date days :)

Three

I can't believe that Eric and I have been married for THREE years already! Man! Time flies!

I know I know. Three years doesn't seem like much since I know some people who have been dating for 5+ years, but I'm still happy with the end result, lol. Some people function better in terms of dating, while others function well as married. I suppose it just depends on the couple.

Yesterday we had a "Date Day" and went up to Aachen, Germany since that seems to be a favorite lil spot for us. Luckily, the weather was nice! Lately it's been super humid and somewhat miserable because it feels like we're on the East Coast...and to be frank, West Coast peeps don't like hot/humid/muggy weather. So, we went up there, had some amazing sushi at a place called "Crazy Sushi", walked around for a bit and people watched. Tell ya what, Europeans are the most entertaining to watch aside from the people in Las Vegas International... they always have interesting outfits on or they're COMPLETELY oblivious to their surroundings (cutting someone off, almost causing accidents). Great stuff!

We stopped off at my favorite oil & vinegar place and picked up some more Walnut Olive Oil. Sure, it sounds weird..but it's AWESOME stuff! Whenever I make pasta's or even rice, the walnut flavor adds a lil more of a rustric flavor to the food. LOVE it!

Then we went over to the local Starbucks and chilled there for a bit since that's what we did on our first date. Yes, yes. Mushy stuff. But, it's "our" mushy stuff. On our way out, I picked up a Starbucks city mug for one of my friends here since she's been meaning to get one, PLUS, I picked up a "travel" to-go cold cup. Ya know the ones they use for cold drinks? Well, they sell a "permanent" style one with a screw on lid and a little stopper on the straw to keep you from losing it. You're probably thinking "You're so stupid for buying that!", but ya know what.. I collect this kinda stuff, so boo on you! I just have to make a point to tell John not to throw it out just incase he thinks it's trash, lol

Thinking back on all the things we've done together, some of the up's and down's we've experienced over time and such, I'm so grateful to have him in my life! I couldn't imagine my world without him :)

* play heavenly music *

We officially have a Senseo now!! :D Eric and I went over to Lommel today and looked through all the different models they have and figured out which one we wanted. Not only that, but we picked up the extra "loaders" for it so we can switch out from espresso maker, to latte, to hot chocolate.. ahhhhh! In love!

I must say.....we looked absolutely ridiculous when we went to the Del Haize on the way home to pick up Senseo coffee, espresso, hot chocolate packs. When I got to the check out counter, the girl must've though I was playing a prank on her:

We've been thoroughly enjoying all the different flavors! Not to mention, we're pretty tweeked right now off of all the caffiene...aye aye aye!

In other news, Eric and I attempted to make Gorilla Bread last night and it actually came out pretty good. I tried making it last week and I completely screwed it up.. I mean.. BAD. Cardboard looked more appealing, lol.  Here's a picture of the one he and I made together:

Lesse... we currently have a friend of ours visiting, Mr. Aric... he's normally stationed in Ghedi, Italy (8 hours from here), but he happens to be up at Ramstein for some classes. SO, he drove down to spend the weekend here in lovely Belgie with us :) We were gonna take him out to dinner at "Sweet Name of Jesus", but when we got there.. they were actually COMPLETELY booked for the entire night. Of ALL the nights, this was the one night that we couldnt get in. TOTALLY ruined our plans, then again, I didn't call ahead...figures! lol. We ended up driving to Eindhoven since Eric kept telling me about an awesome sushi bar there. We meant to go there for our wedding anniversary, but we never managed to make it there since we had other things to take care of. Well, we got there and it was a total trip. Eindhoven itself is really cool. Unfortuntely, we really didn't have a chance to look around since we got there later in the evening (around 7ish) and all the stores were already closed.

Anyway, here's some pics of the place we ate at (Sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures, it's with my cell phone):

The food actually came on a convater belt!! It was pretty cool cause you could figure out what you wanted as it was going by. When you saw something you like, you just picked it up. The prices were marked with either a little green or red sticker that was on the lid. Green was 3.50 euro and red was 5 euro. Needless to say, John kept grabbing the 5 euro items...uggghhh, lol. Our bill came out to 113 euro...it burns so baddddd....Then again, that was for 3 adults and 1 child.

Delicious idunnowhatitis in an oyster shell! It tasted like bacon and something else, but honestly, I dont wanna know what it was. All I know is that it tasted damn good, lol

Random rainbow in Eindhoven, lol
