Last Ditch Trip!

I can't believe how fast time is flying by! Mentally, I'm wanting to just plant my feet in the ground and say "NO! You're not gonna make me move! I belong in Europe!"...alas, the Air Force is a thing you can't really argue with.
Le sigh.

With that being said, I'm going on a last ditch trip before we officially move back to the states. I'm going to Scotland, baby! YEAH!

Actually...I think the landscape is gonna look like this more or less since I'll be going in January:

Either way, I'm just thrilled to have the chance to even go there! Unfortunately, Eric won't be able to come since he'll be busy with work and doing all the important stuff he's gotta get handled in order for us to move. Being the awesome man he is, he told me go ahead and go since I'll end up kicking myself for passing it up.

Ya see, an old friend of mine lives over in Montrose, which is about two hours from Edinburgh. He extended the invite for me to come over and visit for a bit because 1). We got lots to catch up on 2). He knows I've been wanting to go to Scotland 3). IT'S SCOTLAND!

I'm actually rather excited to be in that town because I really...REALLY miss living near the ocean. Plus I can venture around a place I'm not really familiar with aside from checking out the typical tourist places. Of course, I want to check out Edinburgh and all it has to offer, possibly check out Balmoral Castle near Aberdeen..aghhhh..too many choices! Luckily, I'll be there for a week, so hopefully my friend is understanding and I'm gonna be on the move non stop to see all the things :D

Japanese, If You Please

Alrighty! I managed to find some time to actually hammer this post out since I have horrible shiny syndrome and have been a little preoccupied with various things. So, here we go!

Eric had some time off from work, so we ended up using one of the days to check out the local Japanese garden over in Hasselt. I've been meaning to go for the longest time, but of course, I kept procrastinating because I'd usually forget about it. If you don't know me, I'm rather flighty. If you know me, thank you for your patience! During the Spring, it's completely covered in Cherry Blossoms..so I'm a little sad I missed out on that, but, the garden itself is absolutely gorgeous!

This happens to be their 20th year, so of course their brochures & tickets reflect not only the occasion, but some Japanese style water paintings of the cherry blossoms. Simple., but pretty!

We got there right at opening to ensure that we avoided some of the tourist traffic. I mean, I don't *really* know how busy the place gets during the day, especially in the middle of the week, but I didn't wanna risk having to deal with people wondering into the middle of a shot, know what I mean?

The parking lot has a bunch of Willows (by far my favorite type of tree), so of course I had to get a picture of one of 'em. Eric on the other hand was teasing me about how they're evil tree's since they're the "best" to use when applying the Southern term for "rule of thumb" or "pick your switch". I suppose they're called "Weeping" Willows for a reason. Creepy phrase for such a pretty tree!

Right when you walk into the park after buying your ticket, you instantly see the beautiful landscaping. It instantly gave me a "calm" sort of feeling, that's for sure.

Oh yeah, and when you buy your ticket, you can actually buy fish food for the Koi fish they have throughout the garden. They're EVERYWHERE. Eric was a total kid about tossing the food out to them so they'd all bunch up in front of us.  The first pond area you see has little Koi (I'm assuming they're separated from the larger ones because they're so young)..and the further you get into the garden area, the bigger they get.

When I say Eric was like a big kid, I mean..he was literally like a kid getting all excited to toss food to the fish. It was pretty hilarious! The surprising part was to see how close the Koi were getting to us. If you click on the pic below, it'll enlarge so you can see how close they were getting to the cobblestone and within very shallow water.

There was this seating area towards the back of the garden that was VERY cool! I mean, it's tables and what not..so no biggy there, but it was the way the tree's wrapped up the thatching that was the cool part.

Every where you walked was picturesque! I was definitely loving it, especially since there wasn't a massive horde of tourists running around or anything.

I thought this was rather cool. They have bamboo frames set up on some of the bonsai /cypress trees in order to train them to grow a certain way.

They have what I'm guessing is a traditional style Japanese home that you can check out. As you can see, one size does not fit all in terms of height clearance. It doesn't really pay to be 6'3"..luckily for me, I'm only 5'7" and could walk in without worrying about bashing my head on anything. I could only imagine how interesting things could get if we happened to ever get stationed in Japan, lol

Again, more picturesque areas throughout the garden area.

The waterfall was really cool! Once you're done walking around the main part of the garden area (it's a huge loop), you end up coming back to the waterfall and you're able to use the stones as a path to go directly in front of it.

Eric was really diggin' it because the second he made his way near the water, it's like the Koi fish had sent out a bulletin notifying everyone else "HEY! This guy feeds you!!"...they rushed up to him, NOT ME, and started bunching up in order to get goodies from him.

It must be a "guy thing" when it comes to fish or something. At least my guy wasn't the only one trying to play with them!

Eric was absolutely IN LOVE with this little fatty! He lovingly referred to him as "Cole's Cousin" since Cole is a bit of a butterball..and this fish had the same sort of "hungry hungry hippo" logic when it came to eating the fish food Eric kept tossing him.

Eric was trying to coach me into putting a bunch of water in my purse in order to smuggle the fatty fish home.  Didn't work.

Oh, and beware of the ravens. This guy pooped on Eric...yes, pooped. He came back to review his handy work and proceeded to laugh at Eric's misfortune.

All in all, it was a very relaxing time to hang out there, check out the scenery and be somewhere other than a movie theater, or plopped in front of the laptop / tv in order to spend time together. I'd definitely recommend going there..I'm curious as to how it'll look in the Fall / Winter time!

Part 3

April 11th, 2010 – Tourist!

Once Dad and I were coherient and managed to get ourselves out of bed & dressed for the day, we toodled over to Grandpa’s house and picked him and his wife, Paula, up and checked out a “Car Boot Sale”. Just judging by the name, I assumed it was like a car show type of thing, but it was actually like a yard sale. People just toss all the stuff in their cars and sell it out of the trunk..go figure! Saw some pretty cool things, but nothing that we could truly live without. One of the places we went to had this sign:

Makes you feel like “Okkk, not really wanting to leave my vehicle all that much now” despite the fact that we weren’t all that far from it.
After that, we went to a nearby town and met up with my (I think I got this right), Half Aunt Juliana, at a nice little English Pub. On our way there, I noticed a Cornish Game Hen walking out on the side of the road and kinda pause as if he was reconsidering crossing. Well.. the bird figured he’d dash across anyway despite the fact that it was heavy traffic on a narrow country back road. He managed to get halfway across my lane when he caught a good gust of wind and flew up onto the hood of my truck and barely missed my windshield by mere inches (I was buzzing along at 50mph). At this point, Paula starts laughing hysterically cause it reminded her of an incident that happened years ago when my Half Uncle, Tobe , was first learning how to drive when he was 17 years old. I guess when my Grandpa Ted was teaching him how to drive, Tobe managed to smack a hen that was on the road. Seeing how it was now considered a free fowl, Grandpa had Tobe stop the car, picked up the bird..tossed it in the car and off they went. WELL… a lil while later, the bird actually regained consciousness since apparently it wasn’t actually dead yet and thrashed around the car frantically trying to get out. It scared the hell out of everyone since they thought it was already ka-put, lol. After telling the story, all Paula had to say was “it was quite delicious”…so I’m assuming the bird didn’t stay conscious for very long.

The pub that we ate at:

When we went for a walk after Lunch, we came by a nice area by the ocean and chilled for a bit:

Before we came over to England, everyone kept telling me that I HAVE to try Fish-N-Chips since that’s one of the things that the UK is known for. Sure enough, when I looked on the menu, that’s what they had to offer. SO, I got a cod fillet fish-n-chip. It was amazing and oh so heavenly! Luckily we went for a nice walk after lunch so I wouldn’t feel so guilty about eating something so heavy / fatty. I’m sure that won’t be the last time I have one of those while I’m here. I’ve yet to have any English tea, but then again, I haven’t really been in the mood for it either.

Since the hotel we’re staying at has a kitchen, we went over to Tesco and loaded up a shopping cart with some groceries. I felt rather dorky considering I always see Tesco commercials at home for goodies that aren’t available where we live..soo.. I managed to track down some of those things (cereals, dinners and such). I know for a fact that I’m gonna have to buy A LOT of one of their cereals here since it’s amazing (clusters of peanuts and caramel) since they don’t sell it back in Belgium..it’s the little things that make us happy!

They even had Cadbury Pudding!!

Sadly, I managed to get a rather nasty migraine in the midst of lunch and all, so while we were at Tesco, I picked up some meds to make the pain stop. It was pretty cool cause they have a pharmascist on hand to help you figure out what you need to get (they don’t have things like OTC pain killers for you to grab on your own), so she pin pointed which one I actually needed. Once we were all done pillaging the place, we dropped Grandpa and Paula back off at their place (stayed for a bit since Dad and Grandpa were talking about war stuff)..I fell asleep due to pain and meds, then made our way back to our place.

I believe we’ll be checking out some nearby castles tomorrow..I’m REALLY excited to check ‘em out! On Wednesday, we’ll be taking the train into London since I MUST be a tourist and see that famous place, invade their starbucks for an official mug and check out their museum of art. I just really wish Eric was able to join us on this trip..he’d love this place 
