"It's like a hoarders house, but organized"

I know I said on the last Poland trip that it was my last one, but I swear...this time WAS our last one. I couldn't help myself, especially since we officially know that we won't be staying overseas.. Not to mention, Eric still hadn't had the chance to do a pottery dash. So of course he needed to join us on the insanity to really get a true understanding of what a "dash" consisted of.

Like usual, I picked up our official Poland van from Schinnen since I had arranged for it many months ago...and got an interesting surprise. Ya see, I normally got a "transporter" van which allows for a good amount of space for not only the passengers, but for pottery as well. This time, that's not what I was given. Not in the slightest. I was given a VW 9-pack van that barely had any sort of trunk space for luggage, nevermind the notion of tons of pottery. I was informed that their fleet no longer consisted of the "transporters" because customers complained that they were "too big" to fit in parking garages around Europe. Well...I've never had that problem, especially since I don't even have to deal with garages where we'll be! Needless to say, I was extremely displeased and made them very aware of it.

The next day, we all loaded up and made it to Poland in WONDERFUL time.

It was so chilly during the drive that ice formed up on the side mirrors!

So wonderful in fact that it allowed us to shop for three hours before any of the stores closed for the day, lol. Eric surprised me because he ended up finding all sorts of stuff he was wanting to get! Who am I to stop him?

Our original plan was to just go for the food. Obviously, that plan went out the window!

As you know, shopping burns lots of calories and worked up everyones appetite..so, we found one our favorite haunts, called Elric's, and gorged ourselves silly.

We headed to our fabulous hotel, which is the Palac Brunow. It's the second time I've stayed there and it's a truly awesome place! In all seriousness, if you find yourself shopping in Boleswaleic for pottery, just do yourself a favor and stay at the Brunow even though it's twenty minutes outside of the town. It's worth it! Since we opted to stay with them for three nights, they actually upgraded our rooms without an additional charge, AND, they threw in free breakfasts & dinners during our stay. How awesome is that? It was definitely a pleasant surprise since *I* wasn't expecting that..so the rest of the gals were definitely stoked on the notion! Eric and I ended up getting a really nice premium room which happened to have its own glass encased balcony...it was really cool! Plus the view overlooked almost the entire property, so we totally scored with an awesome room for our last trip. Here's what ours looked like:

I gotta say, the estate itself is so pretty in general, but it was gorgeous with the morning haze!

We all stumbled downstairs, fueled up on the breakfast buffet then took the town by storm.
Oh man...that city didnt know what it was in for! If you've done this sort of shopping before, you'll understand when I say it sort of feels like a "frenzy"...like there's blood in the water. Once one person finds something really cool, then it's like a personal mission to find something equally cool for your collection. Now remember, there were seven of us shopping...so consider how many frenzies were going on. LOTS. Everything started to blur together because there's just SO much stuff in each store..and I believe we attacked almost fifteen stores..most of 'em we repeated multiple times:

I don't even remember half the stuff I bought...neither did Eric. Well..neither did most of the ladies. Some of em wanted to open up their boxes throughout the day to figure out what they've bought so far, lol. The mind set was basically "GO! GO! GO!" till we couldn't go anymore. I think we ended up throwing in the towel by 5:30 ( we had been shopping since 9am) and retired back to the Brunow.

Once we got back, the hotel made our dinner reservations for six o'clock in which we had an awesome goulash sort of soup as an appetizer, then something that sort of reminded me of my grandmas roulladen. It was pork that was wrapped around carrots and a variety of other things and were braised, served with mashed potatoes and a mixed pickle salad (THAT was weird for me!)

Notice the....um...decor for the dining room..

Eric was not a happy camper because he said he could "feel" the dolls looking over his shoulder..lol

Since he was such a trooper, he earned himself some ice cream :)

I think we all hung out in the dining room for almost 3 hours since we were swapping stories amongst other entertaining factors that were in the room. Everyone retired for the evening since we had a busy day planning

The next day, we had the same routine with chowing down on some breakfast and I was plotting out the plans for what other stores we were going to invade. Also, some of the ladies in addition to myself are Starbucks mugs collectors. The last time we were in Poland, we debated on making a dash to Wroclaw, which is an hour and a half from where we were staying. Sadly, we didn't make it there since the gals were just having too much fun hunting for super sweet patterns. This time around, I made sure to have us stay an extra day so we could attempt the dash. I REFUSED to leave Poland without my mug!

To our surprise, it randomly snowed in the town we were shopping in, yet, not the place we were staying at. Weird, right? lol

After smashing and grabbing at some stores, we wanted to get some lunch before hitting the road to Wroclaw. We were originally gonna go back to Elric's, but they weren't available so we randomly hit up a place called OpaÅ‚kowa Chata, which looked....intriguing. Yeah...intriguing would be the word for it. Sure, it looks funky and what not, but we gave it a shot.

OH MY GOSH. How have I not been to this place before?! It was AWESOME! They actually use MASSIVE portions when it comes to the stuff you order! For a starter, they gave us a basket of freshly baked bread with a side of bacon butter. Yes, you read that right...BACON BUTTER. It was heavenly! Ahh!

Of course, I ordered myself some perogies because, hey, I'm in Poland. These things were MASSIVE. As in, each one was about the size of the palm of my hand. The filling was like a cottage cheese consistency with onion, and the outside was briefly sauteed in bacon. They were out of this world! I would've stuffed myself stupid on those things, but they were so filling that I could only finish off half the plate!

Eric ended up ordering a potato pancake that was "stuffed" with Goulash. I know it doesn't seem very large in the picture, but when the plate was put infront of him, even Eric looked a little concerned.

Eric really really wanted to acquire the pot and spoon, but it wouldn't fit in Bill, and we certainly weren't going to strap it to the roof. His was very displeased with my answer..

We rolled out to Wroclaw and made it in a decent amount of time despite the fact that there was seriously thick fog. It wasn't concerning me too much since I was used to driving in that sort of thickness back in California, but at night time, it was a nightmare. Anyway, I managed to do fairly well driving around the city till the traffic and narrow streets started setting off my anxiety. And I mean it got BAD. So bad that I had to hop out and have Eric take over cause I started getting that panicked "shaking" feeling. I forgot to take my meds that day (of all the days to do that!) and everything was setting me off, especially the traffic. Luckily, Eric was a trooper and managed to find us a parking spot fairly quick and not too far from the Starbucks. Since my anxiety made me so jittery, I ended up staying in the van to watch after all of the pottery while the gang got their drinks and beloved mugs.

Here's my official handy dandy Starbucks Poland mug :)

The return drive home was a little nerve wracking for me since the fog had gotten worse..I mean..A LOT worse. Eric handled driving all of us back since I was still out of whack. We managed to make it back to the hotel in one piece, enjoyed some dinner and conversation, then I had to punch out a little early since my stomach was being difficult. Ultimately, we ended up deciding that we'd check out at a decent time in the morning to hit up a few more shops on our way out of town to head back to Belgium. Yippy!
You know how compromise is a huge thing in a marriage? Well...these little "pots" were definitely a "compromise". Eric really..REALLY wanted them as a "man cave" sort of accessory. All the while, I think they're hideous and I don't want them in my kitchen. Throughout our shopping adventure, he kept telling me "I just want a couple"...after several hours, he finally wore me down and got 'em. Thing is, when I hear "a couple", I think along the lines of two..not four. Ya know? When I saw that he had four of 'em, it was on like Donkey Kong.

How'd I get even? Let me introduce you to Lola:

Ya see...Leroy, my snail that I picked up a year or so ago, has been lonely and needed some company. I had talked to Eric about it a couple of times and he'd always say no since I know he wasn't fond of Leroy to begin with..so why get another snail? Well, once he bought those bowls, he knew he was screwed.

Now, Leroy looks pretty happy with Lola :)

Well all ran around finishing up whatever stores we were wanting to invade and got ready to make our long adventure home. Here's how the van looked at the end of all the pillaging:

Eric was literally boxed in and surrounded by pottery in the front seat..

Yes, we stuffed pottery in the door pockets...

Since there was a seat available in the van, the ladies filled it up with their luggage in order to make room for all the pottery...

Annnnnd here's how the back of it looked with all the boxes. I'm pretty sure our van was saggin' like a low rider by the time we departed Poland.

So, here's all my official pictures of alllllll the pottery we picked up. It's a little sickening that we got so much, especially when we really had no intention on getting anymore. Oh well, at least we have enough stuff to last us a while :)

This trip went SO well...I'm sad that it was my last one. Eric was saying that once he retires, we should come back over and do some sort of travel business where we take small groups to Poland in order to do pottery shopping. Of course, we'd never make any money cause I'd buy everything. But still..I think I'd do a pretty good job in the travel industry since I like finding fabulous deals and sharing them with folks. Who knows!

Anyway, hope ya'll enjoyed the bloggy post :)

New Adventure On The Horizon

Welp, we've been stationed in beautiful Belgium now for almost four years.

That means, it's time for us to move else where. Personally, we were wanting Wyoming or even Utah..but..the Air Force had other ideas.

They said, "You shall go to....New Mexico. Congrats!

Merp? New Mexico? Really? What'd we do to YOU?

Ya see, the part of New Mexico we'll be going to is kinda known, at least that area around the base, for being on the shady side. By shady, I mean violent and ghetto. I guess I should be used to that because of my home town in California, but after living over here for all this time, I've gotten rather accustomed to not worrying about crime and shitty people trying to take my stuff.

Of course, when Eric told me about our soon to be new home, he saw a chunk of my soul die...just a little bit. After a week or so for the shock to wear off, I started doing some house hunting since we don't want to live in the base, and we don't really want to be around the military community anymore. Given, he's still got another four-ish years left in the Air Force, but after dealing with the cattiness of military wives here, I'm kinda over putting up with their shit, ya dig? I realize there are crazy civilian women, but they can't throw their husbands rank at me like it's supposed to do something to benefit them.

Anyway, so I've been trying to find positive things to think of in terms of us moving not only back to the States (we really wanted to stay in Europe), but to New Mexico:

- We already have friends stationed there, so it'll be nice to have friendly faces in a new place
- Mail won't take anywhere from two weeks to a month and a half to reach us anymore. Yay!
- I don't have to get yelled at in angry Flemish anymore. Just angry Spanish.
- Waffle House, need I say more?
-Best Buy
-Game Stop
- Eric gets to hunt for new local haunts
-Um...Mexican food? Yeah.
- My stepson can have friends that live in the same zip code rather than a different country!
- If I want to fly home, it won't take 10+ hours of travel time!
- We'll only be an hour ahead of everyone rather than nine! Yay!
- Expand my horizons a little bit when it comes to photography
- Possibly get a job? Perhaps? Maybe?
- BUY A HOME

The last one is rather important to me because I miss having my own personal space for my family. When Eric and I first got married, we lived in military housing and it was very small and very crowded. Then we moved to Europe and our Belgian home is a decent size, but has so many problems due to it's age..it's a constant struggle to keep it feeling like it's livable. We have no desire at all to live in military housing again, and we're not wanting to rent because most renters now a days have a tendency to gouge the tenants who have pets. If you've been an avid reader of mine, you know we have a handful of dogs, so you can imagine how much a landlord would wanna charge us. So, after doing the math and figuring things out, we're opting to buy a home that we'll want to stay with after Eric retires since there's a good chance we'll be staying in the area due to his career field. So, who knows. The hunt for "our home" has officially begun and I'm hoping to have it all resolved by the time we get there early next year.

It'll take some time, but I'll eventually come around to the new scenery. It's all about re-acclimating to a whole new environment.

*Annnnnd just for the sake of saying it, please keep in mind my sarcastic satire when reading this. I'm actually positive about moving to NM even though I'd definitely prefer to go somewhere else. "It is what it is and make the best of it"..which I'm doing, but everyone, including myself, has the right to voice their displeasure with something. I mean, look at the election turn out....people have voiced their feelings about that! Seeeeee!*

"Back-ectomy"

This is a little journal I kept over the last several days for when my husband, Eric, ended up going into the hospital to have a procedure done on his back. Who knows, maybe there's other people out there who will go through something like this and it'll give them some insight as to what they should expect.

Over the years, Erics back has always been a little achy. Some days he's pain free, others he feels as if he's been smacked by a Mac truck. Given, he's on his feet a lot and doing his thing at work, but still, he's only thirty four years old and feels like he's got a lame back. In January, he woke up one morning and he was in a SEVERE amount of pain..so much so that he was on the verge of tears. After a lovely visit to the ER, it turns out that his L4 and L5 were herniated, which totally explained his pain.

This is an image I found online to show how his discs look. His definitely stick out further than they should!

The doctor at the time recommended that he did physiotherapy for a bit to see how that'd help him out...it worked for a little bit, but after a while, his back would seize up again and caused a lot of discomfort. SO, he opted to try another option which involved getting a cortisone shot in the discs to relieve some of the pain. It was a pretty simple procedure..they gave him an epidural then injected the discs with the cortisone, had him chill in his hospital room for about two hours and sent him on his merry way. I gotta say, it seemed to work almost instantly for him since he was able to walk better (rather than favoring one leg) and within a week, he was allowed to start running again. The thing is, the doctor said there was a good chance that it will wear off within a year or so, but it really depended on how active Eric was in terms of physical activity. Being that he's in the Air Force, he's always gotta work out, run, do push-ups, etc etc. About a month after his procedure, he was sent off to NCO Academy (Non Commissioned Officers) for six weeks, which involves not only learning more Air Force stuff, but he also had to do a lot of physical training. Wellllll.... that seemed to speed up the cortisone breaking down because by the time he got back, he was already starting to have a lot of aches again despite going back into physiotherapy. Once the pain started to become pretty intense, we went back to the doctor and he recommended that Eric have a microdisectomy since doing a cortisone shot over and over again is really bad for you. So, that was scheduled about a month & a half ago and to Eric's relief, the day finally came for his surgery!

August 8th -Day 1

Eric and I made it to Mariaziekenhuis nice and early over in Overpelt since that's where he was scheduled to have his surgery done.

Once we got him all checked in, we managed to score him a private room since he was really wanting his privacy during his stay. Belgian hospitals are..err...different when it comes to patients...they tend to shoehorn as many as they can in one room. I'm really glad he had one to himself cause when we were being taken to his room, I happened to see the larger rooms on our way and they had more than one patient in them (some were 3+!) and looked overly crammed. Luckily, his room was a decent size and had everything in there a guy could ask for: tv, radio, mini fridge, wi-fi so he can play on his laptop, private bathroom and shower. He was definitely a happy camper!

I think he was most excited about the fact that his bed had the ability to expand in length, LOL. When he first hopped on it, his feet were right up against the foot railing and his head came up past the top so he looked a little uncomfortable. When the nurse came back in from getting some of his paperwork, she was able to push a button and it popped out another six inches, added an extension pad in and BAM! You would've never known that it was an expanded bed. How cool, right? Eric was definitely a happy camper:

The nurse that was getting him all set up spoke English and was able to give me a run down as to when his surgery was going to take place and when I should roll back over to the hospital. Poor poor Eric! He couldn't eat or drink after 7pm last night, had to get checked into the hospital by 7am this morning and his surgery wasn't till 11:30a! By the time I left him, he was getting a hunger headache and getting a little cranky (can't say I blame the guy).

When it was time to go back over to see him, I brought a variety of goodies for him that he could munch on since the hospital basically gives the patients toast to eat. We jokingly call them "butter sandwiches". Overall, he was feelin' pretty good and just a little sore like you get after you've had a massive workout..oh, he was feeling just a lil bit nauseated from the anesthesia. But, he was in great spirits and was happy to have some company aside from harassing the poor nurses, lol.

August 9th -Day 2

Once visiting hours were available, John and I popped over to harass Eric to see how he was fairing. Never mind the fact that I'm missing him like crazy! I ended up making a butternut squash & feta pasta mixture for his dinner since the hospital food ..ehhhh...sucks. AND, I made it look extra legit by packing it in a "to go" container, lol. I brought some for John and myself since we were wanting to have our family dinner together, which cheered Eric up because I know how he likes to have that time with all of us together.

To my surprise, he was back in his house clothes and no longer in a hospital gown since the doctor and the physiotherapist said it'd be a good idea for him to start putzing around the room a little bit in order for them to see how his back is fairing. So, after they checked him out, they gave him the go ahead to change out his clothes (he was MORE than happy to do that) and suggested that he get up throughout the day to stretch his muscles, plus it won't allow his back to get too stiff from laying all day.

While we had our dinner and caught up on everything, he was telling me about how his evening went the night before because, apparently, things got a little interesting for him. After a little while, Eric wanted to get up and walk around a bit (without help) so of course I needed to make a gif of his effort getting out of the bed. When he injured his back earlier this year, he had a pretty rough time trying to find a seat in the house that'd be a little helpful for him to get some sort of leverage in order for him to get vertical without straining anything else. Sorry the gif is so choppy, but he did manage to get out of bed really well (sort of how he had to get out of our bed with his first injury) and was rather proud of himself, lol

Oh, he lovingly refers to his IV as his "disgruntled girlfriend" since he has to always tote it around with him. He's very happy to break up with her pretty soon because she's becoming a rather annoying pain in his side...errr...arm.

Since he was up, I was able to see how the incision was on his back..and it really wasn't that bad! It's a little over an inch long and he has about eleven staples that he'll have removed in another week or so. He says his back basically feels like he has a massive sunburn rather than feeling like a train wreck, so that's a plus...right?

The funny part is that his antiseptic stains looked like he was assaulted by the fake tan monster.  When he had his cortisone shot done, the antiseptic color was hot pink..like SUPER pink, so I think he's trying to go for a variety of different colors to see what looks best with his skin tone ;)

After visiting him for a good three hours, we parted ways since he was getting a little sleepy and I still needed to clean up the kitchen from making dinner. The "to go" dinner worked fabulously and he asked to have it again tomorrow..so yay for good planning!

August 10th -Day 3

Here's a wonderful example at the type of food Eric was getting in the hospital. Bread wrapped in plastic and two individual pieces of bologna, lol. He was sort of at a loss when it showed up, especially since there wasn't any mayo or anything to kinda add some flavor to the food. Luckily, I brought him his dinner so he didn't have to suffer with the sandwich.

BUT, he was a big fan of the tea :)

At this point, they took him off his IV line and he was allowed to walk around every hour to loosen up his back. Understandably, he was a little stiff the first couple of walks, but once he got moving, he was shufflin' with the best of 'em.

August 11th - Day 4

Eric's officially home now! YAY!!! In the midst of getting all his paperwork together, the nurse handed us a STACK of prescriptions we needed to get filled the following Monday since they were already closed (Eric was discharged on a Saturday). In addition to that, we were told to get him set up for a home nurse to visit the next two weeks since he needed to have his bandages changed daily, have the incision looked at and also have a shot in his belly for Thrombosis. He definitely wasn't a fan of the shots since he'd already experienced them while in the hospital.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the course of this last week, he's gotten more and more mobile by walking around the house, even going on short walks with me up and down the street while walking Cole. He even ventured up to the Commissary with me since he was wanting to pick up some new movies. I think there was only one day where he was really exhausted and took it's toll on him, but other than that, he's got tons of energy and doesn't really have any pain in his back (thank gawd!). The first night he was home..well..wait....the first morning he got up, it was kinda rough on his back since he was so stiff from sleeping flat verses being at an angle like he was in the hospital. Getting out of the bed was an issue, but now he's practically pole vaulting out of it without any problems. The nurses come every day and check on his healing to make sure there aren't any sort of infections. In fact, he actually went back to work today for a little bit since his convalescent leave is up. Then in the afternoon, his staples were removed since the skin had healed up pretty well.

November 11th - 3 months post op

Since Eric's surgery back in August, his back pain has improved MASSIVELY. His back really doesn't like cold weather (it'll tighten up and get rather stiff), and if he sleeps wrong, he definitely knows he made a mistake. Other than that, having the procedure done was one of the best decisions he's made in a while regarding his health!

Here's a picture of his back scar. I refer to it as his "piggy bank slot"

Update On The Grimmling

Grimm is officially a little over five months old now! I can't believe how big he's gotten! The first video was taken a few days after we brought him home, and the second video was taken a few days ago. As you can see, he's the main instigator when it comes to rough housing with the other furballs:

Oh, and he's learned an interesting little trick. He's commandeered Izzy's trog bed and made it his own since he's bigger than her now. He'll turn the bed when it's just me and him up late at night so he'll be able to watch the TV show while sprawled out on a cushion. Smart little booger, hunh? I've been trying my best to catch him in the act and video it, but I always seem to notice after the fact...le sigh.

He doesn't fit in the kitchen sink anymore, so we've had to move him over to the bath tub in order to wash him down. Grimm DEFINITELY knows how to push mommy's buttons because he'll intentionally roll around in mud, rip up leafs and drag them throughout the house, brings in more dirt than I thought was humanly possible (I swear he's got hidden pockets he fills up).. so he's constantly getting dunked and scrubbed:

Of all the dogs in the house, he's totally bonded with Cole the most. They're practically inseparable!

Last month, we got some firewood since it's starting to get a little chilly here and Eric was rather stoked about the whole thing. He's a bit of a firebug in the fall / winter time. Not only was Eric stoked about the pile, but Grimm was as well since he liked checking it allllllll out to make sure it met his high standards:

Isn't he such a cutie?? He's looking more and more like a little old man :D

He definitely knows how to keep himself amused when the other dogs are too tuckered out to play with him:

Last month, the shop we bought Grimm from, Allemaal Beestjes, had a celebration for their store being open for five years. As a thank you to their customers, they offered up a free photo session of your dog if you came by. So of course, we were super dorks and decided to go ahead and get pics of Grimm since we had nice pictures done of all the other dogs. In my mind, I guess I was expecting like a light hearted sort of photo where you see him playing or something like that. Well, the picture came out like a picture your grandparents would have from the 80's:

Total cheese ball factor, but it's still a cute pic and it was for free. Can't really sneeze at that, right? lol

He's got a very hard life around the house with all the rough housing he does with Piper, then snuggles up with everyone when he's not running around like a cat on fire whenever he's outside. He's a VERY sweet little guy...always wiggles and thumps his tail when you smile at him. Definitely a happy lil pup!

At this point, all of his shots are finished and his puppy passport is all taken care of for when the time comes for us to move. Eric and I are debating if we're wanting to get him "snipped" here or just wait till we move back to the States, which will be in late February / early March. Either way, it's gonna happen..it all just comes down to *when*. Oh the joys of being a dog owner!

Privatized Blogging

Aye aye aye...

To avoid the whole "private" thing, I changed my web address earlier this year due to some negative people...and apparently, that didn't work. I've refrained from making my blog private for a long time because I actually enjoy posting my random stories & adventures for people to read, but alas, the time has come.

When I originally posted about the new link on my Facebook, I asked for people to keep it to themselves since I made a specific group who would be the only ones able to see what I posted...and my request was for them to keep it to themselves. Don't share it with people that they know have been purged from my life for a reason. That basically applied to people here at my current base and people we know mutually.

Apparently, that wasn't honored.

Over the course of several months, thanks to my handy dandy visitor tracker....there are specific people who are coming to my site who still read up on my life, despite the fact that they made a valiant effort to completely burn me to the ground, then promptly tell me to fuck off & to "not bother" contacting them once they were sure that they tarnished my name. I find it ironic and somewhat amusing that they wrecked house like they did, then have the gall to come check my blog for ideas, pictures and recipes. Not only do they check my blog, they have gone to my Pinterest site as well and have followed my activities. What the fuck is that about? The damage they did to me was not warranted in any way, shape or form, so it shook my foundation to the core because they were people I considered to be life long friends. I was wrong. So very, very wrong. True faces were shown and yet another lesson to add to my life. My walls are back up and  once again, it's hard for me to be easy going and welcome new people into my life with open arms.

So, there ya have it. That's why I've made my blog private.
