I absolutely love where we live. We're in a nice neighborhood..we're within a reasonable distance if we wanted to walk or bike into town. It's quite for the most part, except when it's obviously time for people to leave work and go home..this street seems to turn into the autobahn since people speed like mad. Other than that, I have no complaints at all.
Now, for those who live here..they know what I mean when I say "There's construction on my street". For those who don't truly understand what that means... I'll explain. The Belgians seem to take their time when it comes to building stuff, whether it's just a small patch of road being repaired, or a driveway that's getting replaced. It takes FOREVER for things to get completed. Down the street, someone was building a house and they were quite quick about it, but it made things REALLY difficult when you were wanting to drive past it since massive semi-trucks would block the way. They finally finished up that home about two months ago..and it's awesome :)
Well. That "relief" from the semi's was short lived because now our landlord is starting a construction project. We picked this house specifically because it has a large side yard where all the dogs can run around without any problems. It's fabulous! About a week or two after we moved in, they solved the rodent problem our landlord had mentioned since the weenies love to hunt moles and such. We have been officially mole and mouse free for two years...yes, weenies rock! Anyway, the yard was the main seller, especially since our landlord was OK with the dogs.
Cue in my sadness.
Our landlords construction "project" isn't little..by any means. In fact, it's huge. We no longer have the big yard for the dogs since he's turning that area into a duplex. Sigh....SIGH. From what we gathered, the building won't be done till after we move (which is 2013), but it's still a lot of work considering they're going to dig a massive hole for the foundation (lots of massive machines to do that), concrete slabs and movers...lots and lots of noise. In fact, they started the process of getting a huge crane in the yard:
Sigh.
Now, there really isn't much parking available in the street..so when I attempted to leave my house this afternoon, there were four cars parked on my front grass in addition to another parked in our driveway, as well as across the street in our neighbors lot (they're a painting business and have their own parking area)...completely cluttering the street which turned it into a one lane road. I'll be interested to see how this is going to work considering our road is used by massive tractors hauling shit tankers or semi's hauling wide loads.
Luckily, we have a very nice landlord. He understood why we chose his house to rent and realized that we were going to be very unhappy campers since we lost our fenced in yard. Given, we still have the main smaller yard, but there's no fence for us to keep them safe from running down the driveway and getting run over. As much as I love my dogs, they're dumb as rocks and will chase anything that catches their eye...despite training them.
So, he took the time to actually build a swinging gate in our driveway (that latches!!) in order for us to still allow our dogs some sort of freedom. After it was done, the dogs really don't know what to make of it, lol.
Yay for a gate to keep the dogs secured in the yard! Boo for months of loud banging..hammering, a clogged street and Belgians with butt cracks right outside of my office and shower window.

I am glad your landlord was at least considerate enough to put up a gate for you guys. That stinks that you will have to deal with the construction for the remainder of your time there. Hopefully it is not too disturbing of the traffic.
