Curve Containage Challenge

I'm curvy.
That's right, I said it.
I'm curvy.

Other people rather say "fat", but whatever...I know I'm not as aerodynamic as I could be. I know I'm not some little pin thin thing. I'm OK with that. In fact, I'm actually happy that I have curves (albeit, they could be smaller) and I actually get compliments on my appearance, even at my current size. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that's for sure.

As I've been unpacking things for our bedroom, I stumbled upon all my old jeans from ...hmmmm...six years ago. I know I've put on some weight here and there due to moving, stress, depression..ya know, all the fun shit in life. When I held them up, my heart broke a little bits.

My ass has gotten HUGE.

 UGH.

I started making an effort towards changing my eating habits in addition to working out more since I have my  handy dandy membership to Planet Fitness. Plus, now that I'm not working, I don't have any excuse as to WHY I can't make it in to burn some calories off. I don't know what my current weight is, nor is that really my main concern. As long as I start feeling better and my clothes start getting looser, that's all I really care about. Since I started watching my intake, I can tell I've lost something thus far since my jeans are already getting "roomy" around my waist and they don't feel like they're painted on. So, that's a good thing...right?? lol. My extra motivation to get this under control is the fact that the weather here is killing me. Who wants to be all layered when it's 100* outside?! Not I! I've been wearing more and more dresses so it'll relieve some of the heat, but I don't wanna look like I'm rocking a moo-moo.

Luckily for me, I have a very good support group when it comes to friends and family...even Grimm got in on the encouragement when I told him, "Bubba, Momma's gonna get a little more aerodynamic"....he got all sorts of happy and thumped his tail like crazy. I'll take that as support from him, lol. If anything, he can always use my old jeans as stuffing for a doggy bed.

Week 2 (again)

I forgot to post yesterdays weigh in! Sorry! Sorry! I have a really bad thing called "Shiny Syndrome". When I get up on the weekends, I go right into the kitchen and start making breakfast for the guys, then from there we go on with the rest of our day..by the time it dawns on me to weigh in, it's too late. Sounds silly, but if Eric doesn't remind me right when I get up to weigh in, I forget (seriously).

So, I'm just a tid bit over what my lowest weight has been. Hopefully I can make some progress this week since we're heading out to Italy a week from today :D I'm a little apprehensive about the flight because of the damn seats. I love traveling, but not fond of flying since those damn airline seats are narrow. If you know me, you know I don't have narrow hips...momma's got some junk in the trunk, so those seats are usually my mortal enemy. I guess this trip will help me gauge what to expect with my upcoming flight in September (aye aye aye).....eighteen hours in a tiny chair. Shoot me.

Week 1 (again)

So, I'm starting over.

I still have two more months till I fly back to the States, so I'm *hoping* I can get down another ten or so pounds by then. Of course I want to keep up my progress while I'm home, but I'm being realistic about it considering I'll be traveling via car the majority of the time from California, to Oregon, then Washington, back to California in addition to the other trips I have planned. LOTS of road time for me!

Anyway, I weighed in yesterday. Sorry I didn't post then, but Eric and I dove in head first to our "PURGE PURGE PURGE" house project. We're about a year and a half out from moving (no, I have no idea where we're going yet) so we wanna start getting rid of junk we don't need or want anymore. Speaking of getting rid of junk, I managed to lose some weight from my last weigh in:

At this point, I'm a little over a pound and a half shy of my lowest weight since I originally started, so I'm lucky my body decided to be kind & get rid of the additional weight I had gained last weekend.

Here's to hoping for a progressive upcoming week!

Week 16

I didn't lose anything this week. No point in posting a picture since I stayed the same, despite changing up my workout routine, tracked my calories and stuck with my eating plan. Thanks, Plateau.

I'm extremely frustrated right now. Yes, I feel better since I've lost weight in general..but..to feel like my effort, especially after three months of watching everything I eat & working out ...it's a constant uphill battle in molasses. I know, it takes time. I know I know I know...

Week 15

Aye aye aye..week 15! Time feels like it's flying by!

I did my weigh in this morning and I'm down only 2 ounces since my last weigh in. As much as I wanna say ,"That totally sucks" since I busted my ass all week long....I'm also taking into consideration that I'm gaining muscle. So, I'm not kicking myself for not losing more.

When I first started back in March, my Body Fat percentage was about 53%...!!! That's a little daunting to think that over half of my body is pure jiggly fat. Now it's at 46.6%..not too shabby. My thighs and legs are really starting to tone up..Eric even commented on 'em when he was helping me stretch out my hamstrings this morning, lol. Now if my mid-section would co-operate and start to slim down, that'd be fabulous!

Remember when I said I ordered a kettlebell? Well..the merchant I ordered it from on Amazon fell through and ended up cancelling my order. LOL. Thanks for that! So, I ended up searching all over again for another one since it seems like no one over here sell's em.  After reading various reviews and checking multiple sites, I wound up getting an adjustable kettle bell by Jillian Michaels for a VERY reasonable price ( I saved $39!!):

It adjusts up to 20lbs (without any weights, it weighs 3lbs)..so that'll give me the option to add more weight as time goes on. The DVD's I ordered already showed up, so I've been working out with my Gaiam 8lb ball in the mean time:

Jillians DVD " "Shred it with weights" is no joke. It kicks my ass! Luckily, it comes with two different sessions..level 1 and level 2. Needless to say, I'll be on level 1 for a while, atleast till I can do a Turkish Get Up correctly and without struggling, lol

In other news, I've officially hit 100 miles!! Lots of walking and elliptical work!!

walking apps

My handy dandy DailyMile widget tells me I've burned 32 donuts (or 12 hamburgers) since I started tracking my distance since March. For my peeps that are still in California, 100 miles would be like going from Salinas (south side near Blanco & Davis) to Paso Robles (whoa!)..or for my local peeps in  Belgium, that'd be like me walking from Peer to Bastogne. Woot!

I think that deserves a nice tall glass of water!

On that note, I'm off to enjoy the remainder of my Saturday!

Week 13!

Please excuse my thugnificent band aid on my footsie. Since it's getting warmer over here, it seems like every creepy crawling or flying bomber has decided to come out of the wood works and bite me. I literally have 15 bites all over me and they tend to focus on my joints..wtf!

Anyway, I'm officially down 20lbs!!! EEEEEEEE!!!!! I SQUEALED when I looked at the scale and it showed this:
Things are startin' to pay off! Lots of walking and watching what I eat is really...really helping! As a "reward" to myself, Eric and I are heading over to a local town called Bree to check out a store called EuroSport. From the various things people have told me about the place, it's like a sport store that's got anything / everything in there you could possibly imagine. I'm looking into getting myself a kettlebell.

If you don't know what a kettlebell is, here's a picture for reference:

Thanks to Wikipedia, here's an explination of it far better than I could've given you:

The kettlebell is a cast iron weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Sizes may range from 4 pounds (1.8 kg) to 175 pounds (79 kg).

Unlike traditional dumbbells, the kettlebell's center of mass is extended beyond the hand, similar to a clubbell. This necessitates ballistic and swinging movements.By their nature, typical kettlebell exercises build strength and endurance, particularly in the lower back, legs, and shoulders, and increase grip strength. The basic movements, such as the swing, snatch, and the clean and jerk, engage the entire body at once, and in a way that mimics real world activities such as shoveling or farm work

Variants of the kettlebell include bags filled with sand or steel shot, water, or which take a variable number of plates. They also have a center of mass extended beyond the hand and allow for swing movements and release moves with added safety and added grip, wrist, arm and core strengthening due to the shifting fill material.

I've had various friends recommend it to me, swear by it and thing it'd be good for me to use since I'm wanting to tone up and get rid of the flub I have on my arms. Eric said it'd be great to help strengthen my back and it'll help my balance and core. So, why not give it a shot?

PS: I just noticed I'm finally getting a flippy floppy tan! Ha! I'll be ready for California in no time!

Week 12

Maybe it's a good thing that Eric was gone this week? lol. I managed to lose 1.8lbs!

Hopefully my plateau was short lived *fingers crossed* so maybe I'll start making some additional progress. I'm just SHY of being 20lbs lighter and I can definitely tell since my pants are literally getting too lose for my hips! When I was doing some errands yesterday, I was in the midst of checking out at a grocery store in The Netherlands and I forgot something I was supposed to get. So, while the cashier was doing her thing, I jogged over to the aisle I needed to go to and my pants started sagging! A LOT! It felt like they were gonna fall off! I guess it's time to drop down a pant size (score!!!) to see how those feel.

This weekend is going to be a bit of a challenge for me since I'm going out of town to Germany for the three day weekend. For one, I love German food. Two, we're going to our favorite restaurant, which is "The Big Emmas"..they have huge serving portions. I know Eric is chomping at the bit to eat there, but I still need to behave while enjoying myself.

Before, I really wanted to have pork Cordon Bleu with their fantastic potato medallions, but now I'll stick with their awesome chicken salad (even that's gonna be too much for me to eat!):

I hope everyone has a fantastic Memorial Day weekend! Tah!

Week 11 Flop

Well. It's finally happened. I hit a plateau. My weight loss has been crawling ever so slowly and I was bracing myself for a weigh-in with no progress..and..it happened yesterday. I didn't bother taking a picture since there really wasn't much of a point. I'm still at the same weight, despite eating well and walking A LOT with a good amount of time spent on the elliptical. Le Sigh.

The last two weeks have been SO busy for me :( It like it's been a non-stop grind between shows, events, chores, cleaning, saying "bye" to friends that are moving away. Ugh. I'm just sad right now :(

Week 10?!

Holy gawd..it's already week 10!?! Where has time gone?!

I did my weigh in this morning before Eric and I headed out to Germany to pick up a deep freezer. So, sorry this is getting posted later in the evening (my time). I've been on the hunt for a freezer for a while since we've been on a waiting list for one for A LONG ASS TIME..literally since we've been in Belgium, so, we finally broke down and bought one for a very reasonable price. Some places around here are asking anywhere between 300-600 euros for one (NO THANKS!), I did my magic and we found one at Spangdahlem. So, now it's chillin' (ha) in my office.

At this point, I'm down 17lbs since March 5th. Not too bad, right? I think I just need to accept that my body is only going to lose 1lb a week, despite my best efforts. This past week, I put in about ten miles around my neighborhood and on my elliptical, so, it's not like I'm not doing anything. Although, I think I'm going to add in some yoga to my routine this coming week and possibly some light strength training, so I guess we'll see how that goes.

Hopefully everyone else is making some progress on their weight loss journeys! And, maybe I'll see a post from Stefanie in regards to her weight loss / working out routine.

Week 9

Well, hey..look at that. I actually lost something! I feel ridiculously bloated right now thanks to Mother Nature and it's making me so cranky. Last week, my pants were literally sagging off my hips and now they feel like they're painted on. VERY annoying!! Today is our earned "cheat day" and Eric's ready to cut loose since we'll be attending a friends "Post Cinco De Mayo" party..so lots of Mexican food and fabulous drinks. Then after that, I have a girls night event I'm going to at another friends house...from the sounds of it, it's gonna be one hell of a time. Soooo I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing my fat(ter) pants tomorrow!

Saturday, April 30, 2011

Week 8

Good grief..it's week 8 already!?!

At this point, I've lost 15lbs since the beginning of March. Not too shabby! Although, I still have another 40lbs to go before I head back to California later this year (17 more weeks!).

Hopefully I'll be able to kick into high gear with my workouts since my knee is feeling LOADS better!

Motivate

I'm currently on my eighth week of changing my eating habits and it's definitely turned into a regular routine for me. By sticking to my plan and having one designated "cheat" day a week, it's helped me stay on track and all that jazz. Since I've done that, I sleep better, feel LOADS better with more energy, my skin looks better and my hair actually feels softer (go figure, right?)

I don't think some people realize how hard it is to actually lose weight. Obviously it's a commitment to eat better, be more active and such..but even with those factors, it can still be a challenge to get slimmer despite all of your best efforts. I remember my Dad telling me many moons ago, "It took time to put it on. It'll take time to take it off."...damn him for being right. Rome wasn't built in a night, ha. It's definitely going to take time to get off as much as I'm wanting to lose, but I rather do it the healthy way than crash dieting for the rest of my life.

I just get a little irritated with some people who sit there and preach about weight loss when they've never really experienced being overweight. I understand that there's some people who want to lose 5 or 10 pounds..that's not considered fat. When your weight is causing physical pain in your back, knees, hips and effecting your social life, then I think you'd be able to understand where I'm coming from. I've had people straight up tell me "Just lose the weight". HEY! If it was that easy, don't you think I'd have it done? It's NOT all that easy for everyone. My husband drives me nuts because he can drop 10lbs in a week by practically yawning...I'd be lucky if I lost 1 lb. Weight loss for women is SO much harder than it is for guys, and it's the guys that tell me to drop the weight. THANKS! NOT HELPING! Even when I played water polo, I was still "thick". It feels like I'm destined to be curvy, but I'm making it a point to be a HEALTHY curvy. It's a daily battle that I gotta deal with, but, it'll make me feel better in the long run. When I run across sites like this one, I'm in awe as to how cruel some people can be towards overweight individuals. Yes, I personally know of several people who always say they want to lose weight, but do nothing about it...but then there's people out there who are legitimately trying their damnest and putting out an immense amount of effort to better themselves. Yet, all fat people are lazy. Yup. Rather upsetting to deal with from time to time...anway...

I know my weight loss partner, Stef, has been hitting some pesky speed bumps with her progress, but I'm sure she'll pull through just fine and the weight will just start to fall off. With my weight loss crawling and Stef's being stubborn, I decided to look up some quotes that might possibly help motivate us, if not give us a chuckle, and get us back on track to pushing ourselves towards our goals :)

End of Week 7

Ohhhh my goshhhh... my weight loss is dragging! A pound a week is starting to drive me nuts, especially since I'm eating healthy! I know...I know..some weight loss is better than no weight loss, but still. I've been stuck in the 240's for a while now and I'd definitely appreciate it once I hit the 230's.

Oh...and it's driving me nuts that I always land on .4!!! Seriously, wtf! lol... I'm just shy of losing 15lbs since I started, so not too shabby. Hopefully I can make additional progress this coming week since I really do want to slim down, especially before I go home!

Week 6!

Here's my weigh in for Week 6 :)

My weight loss is obviously slowing down to a crawl, but it's ok. Something is better than nothing! Now that my knee is doing a lot better, I should be able to pump out some walks this week :)

Saturday, April 9, 2011

End of Week 5

Well, I knew it was bound to happen.

I gained a little over a pound this week, but I'm not really torn up about it. In all honesty, I was expecting it to happen since I wasn't able to walk all that much since my knee has been rather problematic. In addition to that, I haven't been feeling all that well. Excuses excuses ...blah blah blah.. I'll get my shit together this week and suck up the knee discomfort and do more walking.

I will say, though, that I'm kinda worried about this upcoming week since I'll be leaving for Poland on Thursday and will be returning on Sunday. Why am I worried? How well have you eaten while you've been on a road trip / vacation ? Given, I plan on eating as well as I can while I'm away, but there's only so much I can do. Myself and a few of the gals I'll be traveling with will be packing water, fruits and other healthy food for the ride there...but a lot depends on what we eat WHILE in Poland, lol. I'm a sucker for Perogies, which are like potato dumplings...but they're not my friend in terms of weight loss. So, hopefully I'll behave.

Is it sad that I'm debating on taking my scale with me so I can weigh in while on vacation???

Fingers crossed that Stef did well this week with her weight loss! I know she's been kicking ass in the gym!!

Coconut Muffins

Due to my eating plan, I can't have flour...processed stuff, salts, sugars..things that normally taste out of this world...blah blah blah. I know, there's plenty of healthy things to eat that taste amazing...it's just taking some time to figure out which works best for me.

After trolling around online for a bit, I managed to find a recipe for Coconut Muffins that didn't require any sort of flour, butters or sugars. I'm sure a few people decided to stop reading this once they saw that those particular ingredients aren't in this recipe...too bad for you.

To those who continued to read, here ya go!

  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 16 egg whites (from whole eggs, not the carton)
  • 1 cup Splenda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons coconut extract
  • 1½ cup ground old fashioned oatmeal (measure after oats are ground)
  • ½ cup old fashioned oatmeal, not ground
If you have a food processor, use that to grind up the oatmeal to a "flour like" consistency. Since I don't have one,  I use my Manual Food Processor to grind everything :)

Mix all ingredients except for 1 tablespoon of the unground oats and 1 tablespoon of the Splenda. Beat with mixer until batter is frothy; it'll thicken up. Yes, it'll look like a hot mess, but trust me...it'll work out. Pour batter evenly into muffin tin lined with cupcake papers to the very top. Sprinkle leftover oats and Splenda on the top of each muffin before baking. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Test muffins with a toothpick-they are done when the toothpick comes out clean.

This should make roughly 16 muffins!

Here's how mine turned out! They look like normal muffins but are heavier since they're made mainly out of eggs and oatmeal.

* I didn't use muffin liner tins since my Pampered Chef muffin pan is amazing and NOTHING sticks to it *

One of them makes me really full, so the carb & protein amount is just perfect for me.

Oh...and Eric loves 'em. THAT alone tells me that they're good cause he's a food snob when it comes to sweets for him to snack on!

Week 4 is done-so!

Weighed in this morning and I'm down just two ounces shy of two pounds :) To be honest, I'm rather surprised I lost anything since Mother Nature has been wreaking havoc on me all week (sorry if that's TMI). Between my knee being rather screwed up from attempting to run, and seriously painful cramps, I haven't wanted to really do jack shit. If you're a woman reading this, I'm sure you can sympathize, lol.

Eric and I made our way over to the gym this morning to get some cardio and weights in since I really need to start focusing on toning up. As much as I want to just lose weight and all that mess, I know I need to do weights, otherwise, I'll look like a Sharpe' by the time I hit my goal weight. SEEEXY!

Here's what I managed to do:

Elliptical: 30 minutes on "Cardio" setting; 2.11 miles and burned 395 calories
Pull Over machine: 3 sets of 10 with 45lbs
Arm Extension machine: 3 sets of 10 with 30lbs
Arm Curl machine: 3 sets of 10 with 30lbs

It doesn't seem like much, but my arms are already killin' me and I know I'll pay dearly for it tomorrow, lol. Oh well, I gotta get in the habit of working on my upper body, mid section especially, and my legs. Eric actually threatened to make me work with the tractor tire that's just outside of the gym (it weighs like 100+ pounds)...nooooo thanks...LOL

I don't think I'll be posting a Week 4 video...eh...maybe tomorrow. I'm feeling lazy and it's gorgeous outside right now...so I rather be out there soaking up some Vitamin D. Who knows when we'll get some sun again, lol.

On that note, PEACE!

End of Week 3!

Woot! Down another 2.6lbs! So, my total weight loss as of March 5th is 10.4lbs....sweeeeet! I'll do a video blog tomorrow since Eric and I are leaving in a few minutes for a road trip over to France for the day. I'm excited! Errr..about France and the weight loss, ha. Happy Saturday, everyone!

Update!

We just got back from running our errands :) So, I was able to do a blog today, yay!

Oatmeal Pancakes...Say WHAT?

As I've mentioned in a few of my video blogs, I've changed my eating habits and have focused a lot of getting rid of stuff that bogs my system down. I end up eating six small meals a day, each one containing about two ounces of protein (chicken, turkey, fish, egg whites, etc), my lunch and dinner have a cup of veggies and half a cup of carb. My snacks are two ounces of protein and half a cup of fruit..so, I'm always feeding "the machine".
Ever since I started, I was alright with having egg whites for breakfast by normally boiling eggs, then having some salsa with 'em and a small side of red potatoes. Honestly, that got old. I'm NOT a fan of white eggs, and masking them in salsa only helped a little bit. So, I proceeded to do some research through some sites to get some idea's as to what else I could make that would fit within the guidelines of my eating specifications (I can't eat flour, and almond flour isn't readily available here). Then, I found "Oatmeal Pancakes". To be honest, the first time I made 'em was a total flop..but after tweeking it a little bit, they're awesome now AND Eric enjoys them. THAT says a lot!

Here's the ingredients:

* ½ cup ground oats, ground in food processor or blender
* 1/3 cup water
* 1 tablespoon Splenda
* ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1½ teaspoons maple extract (OR almond, or even orange)
* 2 egg whites

Luckily, I have my Manual Food Processor so I was able to grind up the oatmeal.

I don't have an electrical one since the one we DID have is currently in storage (110v) and I wasn't willing to buy a 220v one..wouldn't use it enough! So, I put in a good amount of oatmeal into the processor since I figured once you grind it down, it'll make the amount decrease (which it did). Here's how fine I was able to get it:

I mix everything together (although I throw the oatmeal in last), and it looks like this:

Yeah, it doesn't look all that appealing. I agree. But, it actually comes out pretty well. BY THE WAY, this is enough batter to make TWO pancakes, not one huge one! Like any regular pancake, it's ready to flip when there's bubbles popping on the top and test the sides...if you flip it too early, it'll be a oatmeal smushy mess. NOT appetizing at all. A couple of spritzes of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" do the trick in terms of adding a lil bit of flavor as well as a lil sprinkle of Splenda on top. By all means, top it off with some berries (blueberries or raspberries)..bam! You're done!

I end up killing two birds with one stone by having these; my two ounces of protein and my half cup of carbs. Freaking yum! AND, these help give me some extra energy right before I go on my Couch To 5k run!

End of Week 2!

One more week down! Whew!

Since my last weigh in, I've lost 2.2lbs! I'm OK with that! I'll take it!

Sorry I look like poo! Just took a shower and I was hurrying this up since I wanted to go back outside and enjoy the beautiful weather we have right now :D
